We find ourselves in two minds about writing this article. Whilst The Globe in Glossop has become a firm favourite with us, the last couple of times that we have visited we have found it much busier than on previous occasions and this has meant that there has obviously been a longer wait for food and even a struggle to find a table the last time that we were there. Now, in the spirit of helping to promote “vegan friendly” businesses we feel that we should definitely share our experiences of The Globe and why we think it is, in our opinion, the best vegan pub around… but at the same time we do fear that this may lead to it being even busier next time that we eat there and this could result in a further wait for us to be served with the delicious food on offer. However, on balance we feel that we have to tell you how much we love this vegan pub. Never let it be said that we are not prepared to selflessly set aside our own personal interests when it comes to helping others to find fantastic, great value vegan food.
The Globe is located on the High Street in Glossop and from the outside it looks like any other “traditional” pub. Indeed, even on entering, there is still nothing to indicate the fact that you are now in a pub that only serves vegan food. Only on checking the menu board on the wall do you get a clue that this really is vegan pub grub heaven.
There are a good number of options on the menu, ranging from pub favourites like the seasonal soup or hotpot to the slightly more unusual veggie steak with mushrooms in a red wine gravy or, for those who like their food a little more spicy, keema with rice or Mexican bean chilli. Indeed, you really are spoilt for choice and it’s so nice to be able to have anything from the menu knowing that it’s all vegan rather being restricted to just one dish.
Our favourite dishes are probably the chickpea and spinach curry with rice and the sausage and handcut chips with onion gravy, but, to honest, not one dish that we have tried at The Globe can be faulted. Not only is the food delicious, but it’s remarkably good value too, being priced as it is, at the same sort of level as the “non-vegan” versions of the dishes would be at other pubs. Three of us have often eaten there and found that we have change out of £30… even allowing for a couple of drinks each as well.
The desserts on offer at The Globe used to consist of the choice of sorbet or Swedish Glace “ice-cream”, but more recently chocolate cake with vegan “cream” has been added to the menu. A generously sized-slice of delicious vegan chocolate cake with a dollop of vegan “cream” for £2… you really cannot beat that for fantastic vegan food at a budget price, which sums up The Globe completely.
There are still more elements and attractions to this pub as it is also a popular live music venue with regular music nights taking place and gigs being staged in the room upstairs. If the weather is nice when you visit, there is the option of sitting at the rear of the pub and enjoying their award-winning beer garden as well.
In addition, the pub also has its own micro-brewery which means that a selection of the pub’s own real ales are on offer alongside the more familiar beers and lagers. Seasonal offerings can also sometimes be found and during our last visit there were vegan fruit wines on offer… although these were apparently running out quickly.
The location of the Globe, on the edge of the High Peak, means that it is the perfect place for an evening meal for those who might enjoy a day’s walking in the beautiful Peak District with the incentive of some great value vegan pub grub at the end of the day.
If you’re anywhere near the Glossop area you really must go and pay this vegan pub a visit and try the food for yourself… but please leave a table free just in case we turn up too.
